Based in London and southwest Scotland, Julia Williams is an osteopath and naturopath with a passion for optimising the health potential of the individual

About Osteopathy & Naturopathy

Osteopathy is the modern, scientific development of two of the oldest forms of treatment known to man - massage and manipulation. It is essentially a natural therapy, which seeks to overcome the wide range of diseases, disabilities and pains which result from disturbances of the body's framework and moving parts.

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of healing which seeks to promote health by stimulating and supporting the body's inherent powers to regain harmony and balance.

Naturopathy is not a single therapy.  It is not even a group of therapies.  It is a philosophy of health which is at least as old as the time of Hippocrates and adheres to the principle of 'first do no harm'.  It is used by the naturopathic practitioner to assist in increasing the vitality of the individual and to educate the patient in the long-term attainment and continuance of good health.

Osteopathy complements naturopathy perfectly as the structural and mechanical component of the treatment.

Cranial osteopathy is a particularly gentle, but powerful, form of treatment.  It is particularly suitable for treating babies and children
.   Very specific, skilled, light pressure is applied where necessary to assist the natural ability of the body to release stresses and tensions.

The treatment may be complemented with naturopathic advice or conventional osteopathic manipulation, particularly in older children.

Cranial osteopathy is also very useful in treating adults, often alongside structural methods, particularly in treating neck or jaw dysfunction or when addressing an emotional aspect of pain using somato-emotional release techniques.

I have been lucky enough to form collaborations with a number of excellent therapists including fellow osteopaths, trainers, herbalists, NLP practitioners and psychotherapists.  Together, we run a range of self-development courses, in collaboration with a number of other health professionals, both clinic-based and residential. They include health, nutrition and wellbeing, body energy awareness and posture dynamics.

About Neurological Integration

The Neurological Integration System bases its treatment methods on the neurophysiology principle that the brain governs optimum function of all body systems.  This, in essence, makes the patient’s brain, not the practitioner, the most knowledgeable and qualified to diagnose and correct complaints.

The human body is born with a set of maximum tolerances dictated by our unique DNA.  When all body systems operate within our individual template of parameters, we have our best health.  From time to time, stresses (physical, pathological, chemical or emotional) cause our individual tolerances to be exceeded. This is when the body will start to show symptoms of pain and/or illness.  An exceeded threshold may be thought of as a broken circuit - the brain is no longer in full communication with certain aspects of function.

The Neurological Integration System involves a set of prioritised treatment protocols that evaluate your neurological circuitry to determine and address which aspects of your body function that your brain is not fully controlling. It is non-invasive, stress and pain free and is suitable for the new-born baby through to the very aged (and also for animals).

I changed my career direction after qualifying as a chemical engineer from Imperial College, London to pursue osteopathic medicine and graduated with first class honours from the prestigious British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy in 1997.

I spent three years practising alongside Dr. Brian Pattinson, a founder member of the British Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine, gaining experience in rheumatology and orthopaedic medicine.

I held an NHS provider contract with Brentford, Chiswick & Isleworth Primary Care Trust from 1998 to 2001.  I also ran sports injury clinics within several sports and leisure centres including the Hogarth Club and Sunstone Women’s Sports Centre.  I enjoy working with both
professional and amateur sports men and women.  The types of sport and injuries seen vary with location - in Hammersmith I worked with rowers of the Furnival Rowing Club and boxers; in Scotland it is more horse riders (dressage, eventing and their horses and ponies) and long distance runners and fell runners.

The average client also varies with location. In London they tend to be office based (but up early to the gym before work!) with stress-related and sitting posture dysfunctions, in Scotland...well I have certainly become familiar with farming schedules and the episodic injuries that come with different jobs at different times of the year - from hay-makers neck (from turning to watch the baler behind) to calving back (also seen in vets and sheep scanners!) to farmer’s hip (from standing on quad bikes zooming around acres looking for new lambs or feeding stock).

I  have worked for several years with the Dr Fazeela Khan-Osborne of the 121 Dental Clinic and Face52 providing cranio-facial adjustments and assisting with the treatment of malocclusion and jaw pain. I also have a special interest in complex shoulder syndromes and am a registered Neil-Asher Technique practitioner for treatment of frozen shoulder syndrome.

I also gained post-graduate qualifications in cranial osteopathy with the Sutherland Cranial
College,  nutritional and herbal therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, neuro-linguistic programming and Alexander Technique.   I practice QiGong and basic yoga. I am a volunteer for the Lowther Hills First Responders, part of the rapid response initiative of the Scottish Ambulance Service.  Oh and or course I also gain my own injuries regularly thanks to the boys!

I now practice from two clinics in London and southwest Scotland treating patients of all ages with a broad range of conditions from sports injuries, low back pain and headaches to irritable bowel syndrome.

My colleague and collaborator, Paddy Dickinson (Jungian analyst and psychotherapist) joins me for workshops and courses teaching and assisting participants in posture dynamics, body energy awareness incorporating injury prevention and risk assessment and the triangle of health.  Alongside fellow therapists, I also run a health and detox retreat in Devon.

I have established links with various specialists, imaging centres and blood, stool and nutritional testing centres.

I am enthusiastically committed to helping my patients and clients to feel better - healthy in body, mind and spirit!
