As we each develop in our personal lives, we consciously and unconsciously create inner views or “mental models” of the universe that become part of who we are. Most of us know this phenomenon as “building a belief system”.
As we move through life this model or belief system is continually challenged. In order to maintain our mental, physical and emotional health, we must successfully adapt to these challenges and assimilate new information. Much of what we experience concurs with our model, thus supporting what we already know or helping to take our knowledge a step further. The educational system and cultural programming augment this process.
However there are experiences in our lives that seem contrary to our belief systems or completely new to them. When we encounter such experiences, we have the choice of altering our models to accommodate the new information, rationalising the new data to make it fit in with our existing model, or ignoring the information by pretending it did not happen or does not exist.
Events that challenge our belief systems and ultimately cause us to change our views, thereby decreasing our attachment to previous beliefs are truly formative events in our lives. They offer new potentials.
The mental model or belief system is a theoretical construct that organises information and experiences, but never quite represents things the way they really are. The model is not the reality; the map is not the territory. Yet this model of the world shapes our response to “reality” and is so deeply engrained that the process of changing maps or letting go of belief systems is usually a struggle filled with uncertainty and discomfort.
